All hunters in Supernatural have their reasons for why they do it. They all started because a loved one was killed by a supernatural creature: demon, ghost, monster, it matters not. In "Adventures In Babysitting," we explore this and see the counter argument for why perhaps one should not.

"How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters," shows the latest plans the Leviathans have for human kind. They have designed a sandwich that will infect people, turning them into cattle for the Leviathan to feed. Their boss, Dick Roman, wants nothing to make the papers, but unfortunately it does, creating a problem for their new plans to subjugate the planet.

The first half of season nine explored Castiel's experience as the new Adam, the fall of angels from Heaven, and the aftermath of the Trials---particularly that of Dean allowing Gadreel to possess his brother, Sam. We watched each of these stories reflect or weave around a particular center---the Garden of Eden and the Fall of Man. It became both metaphor and literal in the tapestry of the story. “Holy Terror” exposed the serpents invading the various Gardens while “Road Trip” explores the consequences of their invasion---particularly that of Gadreel's possession of Sam.

In the last update, I started digging into learning what I need to learn in order to get my book published.

It seems to start with the query letter. Let me tell you, query letters scare the crap out of me. They're a one page distillation of an entire novel, and I have to be frank. I don't know how to write one. At. All. All my research had me spinning in circles, trying to figure out just what is the right advice and what is wrong.

So, I took the basics I learned from the various articles I read, and I'm starting with the opening of a query letter---or the hook.

Every source I looked up on writing a hook mentioned the backs of books and looking at how they sell you the book. That's basically what you're trying to do in order to get the agent/editor/publisher to even want to look at your book.

Lucky for me, I have a stack of back book covers to read over and study. I think that's the task to do this week and perhaps next in order to get the hook I want.

Even if it seem like a waste, it might do some good to practice writing a hook for a different book, too. Not as pressured to distill my whole book into a single sentence or two---and not as close to my heart then.

I'm thinking of perhaps doing a bit of both for the next couple weeks. I'll share whatever I think is the best in the next update---along with some of the hooks I find on the backs of books that I particularly liked.

I wanna get hooked! How about you? (I know. Groan away.)

Castiel's Grand Entrance:

Castiel's first appearance on the show is something to behold. The giant black wings, the steely stare, the overwhelming presence he presents in that first moment Dean sees him for the first time is always gripping. On my smaller, lower quality screen views, I was always taken aback by his first appearance---but seeing it on the big screen in that clear picture with its exquisite detail, I'm just bowled over.

When I first got into Supernatural, I was watching the show first on a 27” analog TV in the morning with a high level of sunlight glare. Then, I was watching the show on a 15” computer monitor. And finally, I was watching the show on a 19” analog TV. It's amazing how much I missed in my first watches---details, layers, and whole atmospheres were missed by me when I watched it on these screens. Oh sure, I saw enough to be sucked in and enthralled by the story---but I didn't know about some of the minutiae that I just couldn't see or hear. I was in the dark on a lot of them---until I got the show on Blu Ray.

"Time for a Wedding," takes the viewer into a proverbial fun house effect. It begins with Dean sitting in a bar, talking to the waitress about the "annual sacred pilgrimage" to Vegas. A text message pulls him away, telling him to put on a suit and meet his brother at a chapel. Upon arrival, the doors open, revealing Sam, dressed in a suit and oddly happy. It tells the viewer that they are entering into a fun house effect where things will become distorted and twisted. Sam jovially announces to Dean that he is getting married. Dean is stunned. Sam hasn't been seeing anyone as far as he knows. The bride enters, wearing a veil to hide her face. When it is lifted, Dean is stunned at the bride's identity. It's none other than Becky Rosen.

It's Friday, so you know what that means!

Here is our second installment of FAE's Friday Faves.

Number One: Brian Buckley Band

The Brian Buckley Band was introduced to the Supernatural Family by Jared Padalecki himself. They've released some great albums such as Hysterical Blindness, Without Injuring Eternity, and For Her. Brian Buckley has a uniquely beautiful voice that soars over beautiful guitar. The band is an amalgamation of various genres from folk to rock to soul. All of the music is beautiful and full of emotional punch.

I was introduced to this wonderful band when I went to my first Supernatural convention in 2011. They were the concert for that Friday night, and I went in not knowing very much about them. By the end of the performance I was hooked.

Their music became great inspiration for me. I used it as my soundtrack while writing my novel. “I Am Human” is the song that I connected with the most.

If you want to know more about this wonderful band, check out their website.

Number Two: Osric Chau

Supernatural-BurCon-2013-Osric-Chau-interview_edited-2-600x400

Osric Chau was our beloved Kevin Tran on Supernatural. He's a talented actor with a bright future ahead of him. He's worked with the likes of David Carradine and had a role in the disaster film 2012. Chau's also done video game voicing. His next project, Killing Poe, is currently in post-production. He'll be playing the character Bud Polinski.

Since his stint on Supernatural, however, Chau has become more involved with the fandom. He has offered to work on a cosplay event at upcoming Supernatural Conventions that he's attending, selecting a fan that will also attend to help select his outfit. It'll be interesting to see what he does both professionally and on the convention circuit. Chau can be found on Twitter under the handle @OsricChau

Number Three: Nikita

This spy show signed off at the end of 2013. It's four seasons are full of action and suspense, but what really carried it was the relationships between Nikita and her various allies. It had a little bit of everything---humor, drama, tension, friendship, and yes, romance. With the secret government spying making the news these days, Nikita really hits home there, too. Maggie Q makes Nikita a kick ass woman that we all want to cheer for. If you haven't watched this brilliant show, find a way to watch it now in its entirety. It finishes with quite the bang.

Number Four: Super Wiki

300px-Supernatural_wiki_mast

Whenever I need to look up something for an article I'm writing about Supernatural, I always turn to the Supernatural Wiki for my information. They've massed so much of it throughout the show's history. They have everything from major character backgrounds---such as detailed biographies of Sam and Dean---to the littlest detail describing a weapon, minor character, or set design. If you want to know more about various crew members and their roles in making the show, Super Wiki has that covered, too. Super Wiki is a fanrun database and any fan in the Supernatural Family that is willing to help out can. It's one of the best fan resources around---and having it made by the fans for the fans makes it all the more special.

Number Five: Almost Human

This is a new show on FOX staring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy. It fits my TV bill for a buddy drama. Urban and Ealy have great chemistry as Kennex and Dorian. I admit it. I have a thing for buddy shows---especially those that have two characters that banter and bicker. The story centers on a future set in 2048 where all cops must be partnered with an android officer. Dorian is our android---but his model is distinctly more human than most. This is what gives Almost Human its undeniable charm. For a futuristic series, it also hits close to home both in emotions and questions about the advancement of technologies. If you haven't watched this series yet, give it a try.

Until next week!

Have you ever wondered about fandom? Have you wondered why you joined one? Have you ever wondered why a loved one has? Have you ever wanted to understand what makes it tick? Have you ever felt embarrassed that you're part of one---if not shamed? When someone asks you about your interests, do you ever hesitate to tell someone that you're into a TV show or movie or book or band for fear that they won't understand---that they won't get it or you? Then Fangasm: Supernatural Fangirls by Katherine Larsen and Lynn S. Zubernis might be the book for you.

The Mentalists starts with Sam and Dean separated after the revelation that Dean had killed Amy behind Sam's back. A week and a half later finds both brothers drawn to Lily Dale, due to the strange murders of mediums. Unlike previous episodes where the brothers are repairing a rift, the tension is an undercurrent through out. It is not wrapped up in the beginning before the case begins or dealt with at the end. Dean imposes himself into Sam's investigation, and they immerse themselves into the case completely.

For a new writer to the show, Robbie Thompson seemed like an old pro. His episode, "Slash Fiction" reads as a love letter. It touches on so many things. Its self reflexive nature makes fans notice all the shout outs to previous episodes, while giving us more on the big bad of the season. If anything, this new writer proved that he "gets" Supernatural, and it can only be hoped that he gets to write more episodes down the road.

Last time I simply put out an ask for help. I want to know the publishing secret handshake so I can get my book out to the world. So today, I sat down and started the research process.

A follower on Twitter linked me to an article about how publishers go about choosing books for publication. It was a fascinating read, discussing the meeting that takes place between the various people in the publishing house. Marketing, editors, accountants, and more gather to discuss the profitability of various manuscripts on the table. I'm not surprised that the primary focus is on money and sales projections. Working retail as long as I have, that's about the only thing that seems to matter on many levels.

Which makes me think about my literary paranormal novel and it's chances. Since I don't know yet how to make the pitch to sell it to the big group at the publishing house or a literary agent, that brought me to my next step: researching the query letter.

It seems that everyone has their opinion on how a query letter should be written. I don't know how to do that, yet, so I am looking for any advice anyone is willing to give me on this subject. How do you start one? What does it entail? Where should I send it? To how many different agents and agencies should I query at a time? Are there any recommended books anyone can suggest that discuss this in a manner that doesn't just make my head explode?

The more I researched, the more my head started to swim and be overwhelmed. Some said not to start with a hook that jumps into describing the story itself. Others said it's a must. Some said to not give it all away in short synopsis paragraph. Others said you must include the ending or risk being passed on.

Which is right? It would seem that I have a lot more digging to do today and through the week if I'm going to nail down the next piece in the puzzle.

Meanwhile, I'm also debating starting that long overdue fifth draft. I am proud of the current form of my book, don't get me wrong, but I worry that I haven't done enough to make my manuscript as polished as it could be. What needs to be rewritten, cut, or added? What needs better description or dilaogue? I'm a bit lost on that, too.

All in all, this first day trying to figure out what to do now with the publishing goal in mind is a lot of “I don't know what I'm doing. Help!”

So again, I ask for everyone's help and guidance. I do know one thing about publishing---or the world in general. You can't get anything done without asking for help sometimes.

Until next week!

Metaphors and parallels have run through Supernatural throughout its existence. The episode "Scarecrow" is a metaphor about the so-called apple pie life and how it isn't everything as it's cracked up to be. "Heart" and "Metamorphosis" are metaphors for Sam's growing destiny. Castiel's season 6 trajectory parallels Sam in season 4. Dean's attempt to live with Lisa and Ben parallels Sam's attempt to do the same with Jess. Jess's death on the ceiling parallels Mary's.

"So wise so young, they say, do never live long" Shakespeare, Richard III, Act III, Scene I

princes-in-tower-alison-weir-paperback-cover-art

The fate of the Princes in the Tower is perhaps one of the greatest mysteries in English history. Who actually killed Edward V and Richard, Duke of York? How is it that they ended up in the Tower of London at all? Who benefited the most from their deaths? And what was the ultimate result of that tragedy? Alison Weir pens a great case for what happened back in 1483---and squarely lays all the evidence on one man: Richard III.

It's Friday. To celebrate, I thought I'd start something new that I'd like to do each Friday.

I'll admit, I stole this from Felicia Day and her video log, The Flog, but I'd like to make 2014 all about expanding my horizons. On her show, she picks 5 things each week that she'd like to promote or share. I figure if I don't do something like post about it, I'll never get around to doing it. So here goes.

This week's FAE's Friday Faves:

gslogo

Number One: Geek and Sundry.

It only seems fair that I give a shout out to the channel that gave me the idea for this post. If you're into anything geeky---be it games, comics, fantasy writing, or anything else geek-centric---then this is the place for you. It has hilarious videos about playing video games, deep discussions on writing, and all around exploration of everything geek. I highly recommend that you surf around the site and pick what you like. You never know, you might find something new that you like, too!

My favorites so far: Co-optitude and The Flog. Oh, and The Guild.

Why do I love these three? The first one has hilarity with Felicia and her older brother Ryon playing retro video games. It's a great way to get some giggles going. The Flog, which inspired this little endeavor, always has something neat I wouldn't have known otherwise. And The Guild is just awesome, even if it's now finished.

As I explore more of Geek&Sundry, I'm looking forward to seeing and learning more.

Untitled

Number Two: Platinum Rose's Garden.

This weekly Supernatural podcast has become one of my favorites. I'll admit it, I only found out about it because I wrote this open letter. The showrunner of this podcast contacted me about my letter and read it on her show, but ever since I look forward to listening to her show every Saturday. Platinum Rose is funny and does some wicked recaps. She also promotes some neat things she finds in fandom on the show. If you really like Supernatural and want to listen to a fun podcast about it, then head over to Platinum Rose's Garden.

WFBHeaderBlack

Number Three: The Winchester Family Business.

You've probably already noticed this website pop up on this blog a few times now. It's the Supernatural website I write reviews and articles for. Alice Jester runs the site, and if you're looking for a good, intelligent discussion on the show, this is the site to visit. It ranges from deep analysis to wacky comedy pieces to an occasional piece of fanfiction. I've been honored to write for the website since 2011, and I look forward to writing for it as long as Alice will let me.

Number Four: Psych.

Psych came back this week after a long absence on my TV. This is my second all time favorite show, and I am more than overjoyed to have the crazy antics of Shawn Spencer and Burton “Gus” Guster back in my life. The show is hilarious and has one of the best duo stars around in James Roday and Dule Hill. If you love obscure 1980s references, fake psychic detectives, and bizarre crimes, this is the show for you. This is its 8th season.

Number Five: Opinicus Soaps.

I've included this mostly because I have to order another jar of their wonderful “Anti-Crack” cream. I have a hand that I refer to as the “Hand that Never Heals.” My right palm, right under my pinky finger, is one big rough patch that continually starts to crack and bleed. I work with cardboard, so it's aggravated endlessly, too.

When I went to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival this past summer, I found a new store called Opinicus Soaps. I'm already loyal to another soap shop (another fave for another time), but decided to see what this store had, considering it had more than just soap. They let me test a bit of this cream on my poor abused palm, and lo and behold, I felt it instantly penetrate the obnoxious patch.

The best part is that it has no greasy after effects, it's made by hand, and it has all natural ingredients. Oh, and it WORKS. But only if I can use it every night, which is why the “Hand that Never Heals” is back.

They also have lip balms, roll on perfumes, and of course soaps. Check them out here.

This concludes the first of FAE's Friday Faves.

"The Girl Next Door" revives several issues that have been lingering since the Pilot itself. While the boys recover from the Leviathan attack, Sam investigates murders linked to a case he solved as a teenager. The monster this time is a kitsune, and they feed on human pituitary glands to survive. But as Sam says, "nothing in our lives is that simple," and that holds true for this very case.

Anytime Ben Edlund's name appears as writer for an episode, I know that I will be either laughing till tears run down my face or crying as my heart breaks. "Hello, Cruel World," is most certainly the latter. Pair an Edlund script with the directorial skill of Guy Norman Bee, and Supernatural hits the jack pot every single time. If it was Edlund's intent to break every Supernatural fan's heart with this particular episode, he did that and more. For good measure, he twists the knife deep a few times. He also never lets up.

Today is Epiphany.

It's also the day I started writing my novel back in 2011.

Without getting too in-depth into the back-story of it, I took an idea that had been percolating in my brain for a couple months, and decided to finally start committing it to paper. It was supposed to originally be a short story, but it become a novel after I ended up telling the actor I had picked to model my character on about it. For a year, I diligently spent each weekend writing and working on it. Through the week, I would work on outlines and sketches so I'd have something to work on during the weekend. Essentially, I lived this book.

I've managed to complete four drafts---and I'm looking to seriously write a fifth, but it's publishing that I'm looking to get into now.

I've noticed that the publishing world is very much a club. If you know someone who knows someone it's a lot easier. It also seems like there's an elaborate double---triple secret handshake that only those in the club know, and if you're not one that knows it or didn't get the memo update that your'e not going to get in. I'd like to learn that secret handshake, please!

When I wrote my novel, I was updating on Twitter after each writing session. It was my moment to celebrate a weekend's hard work. It also kept me honest. If I had written the novel in isolation, I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have written the novel at all. So, I think I'll make use of this anniversary to ask for help.

I'm also looking to make this a weekly entry. That way I don't get stuck as easily---or worse, just plain lazy.

This week, my main questions are:

---Any advice on a query letter? How do you go about writing one?

---What types of hooks work best and what's the best way about writing them?

---How do you even begin on a synopsis? Every time I try to think about this task, I freeze. It seems so daunting. They want everything about the book in it, but not everything in the book. Any ideas on synopsis would be beneficial.

That's this week's Novel Update. If you have anything to offer, leave a comment, and I hope by next week I'll have some progress to share.

Noir is Dead. Long live Noir.

Supernatural has stripped back down to basics. It has returned, in many ways with "Meet the New Boss," to its old flavor and style. This, ironically, makes the series fresh and renewed. Starting with, during the Road So Far, we can already tell that the show is bringing itself back to the basics. Foghat's "Slow Ride" plays us in, recapping the events leading us to here. The title card splatters a black splotch and fades to brilliant white, stark and bare, reflecting the return to the storytelling that has made Supernatural so good for so long.
