It is Friday, so to celebrate here are this week's Faves:

Number One: Herrschners

I've been embroidering off and off since I was nine. I learned the skill when my mom decided to make a quilt, and I've been making various projects ever since. Most of them are pillow case sets. Herrschners is a craft company that's been around since 1899. They have everything from embroidery to counted cross stitch to yarn. Anything you might be interested in learning to do as a craft can be bought there. Check out their website or catalog. There's so many neat things to pick from! Just don't blame me if you want to buy everything you see!

Number Two: Amanda Palmer

I was introduced to Amanda Palmer when she opened for Nine Inch Nails as one half of The Dresden Dolls. I didn't know what to expect when a man and woman came out on stage dressed like mimes, but as soon as they started to play I was hooked.

The style of Palmer's music is described as being cabret punk. She uses her music to describe dark events in her life with lyrical brilliance. She also doesn't shy away from social commentary, with brilliantly powerful songs such as “Strength Through Music” and “What's the Use of Won'drin.” Palmer has a unique voice and style that makes her songs catching, too. Songs such as “Mandy Goes to Medschool,” “Oasis,” and “Guitar Hero” are hard hitting.

If you're looking for a new music artist, give Amanda Palmer (or The Dresden Dolls) a try.

Number Three: Random Acts

This charity was founded by Supernatural's Misha Collins (Castiel). Random Acts is all about kindness, hence its name. They seek to conquer the world, one random act of kindness at a time.” They have events such as the AMOK Annual Melee of Kindness and Endure for Kindness. Random Acts also worked on a project entitled Hope for Haiti, raising money for the country after the devastating earthquake. Collins brought a group of volunteers down to Haiti in a number of trips so they could build the Jacmel orphanage.

When I went to Salute to Supernatural Chicago 2012, Random Acts was hosting a supply drive for the local women's shelter. If you brought an item on their list of needed items, you were put into a drawing for a bowl made by the children in Jacmel. I brought a small paints set that had been sitting around the house and filled out the drawing form. I was happy to donate and didn't expect to win.

Luck was on my side, and I won the bowl. It was also signed by Misha Collins and Craig Ferguson , who also went on one of the trips to help build the orphanage. It's an honor to have the bowl in my possession.

If you'd like to get involved with this non-profit, check out their website.

Number Four: Blue Heron Soap

This is the other soap store I visit when I go to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. It's all they sell, but it's worth it. For 36 bucks at the store, you can get 6 bars of soap. Each one is hand made with olive oil and---depending on the scent---other natural ingredients. Unlike store bought soap, Blue Heron washes clean without any film---even better than Dove. It's also a long lasting soap. One 3 oz bar can easily last me two and a half months. It doesn't take much to get some lather and it really is a treat to use. My favorite scents are often only available at the Festival---such as Spiced Apple or Cinnamon---but Tea Tree is a go to for its natural healing properties. Lemon and Honey is one of my favorites, too. If you're looking to change soaps, consider shopping online at Blue Heron's site.

Number Five: Sleepy Hollow

This new Fall series just wrapped up its 13-episode run on FOX. I was intrigued by the premise from the moment I saw it advertised. I've always liked the Washington Irving story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” It has the right flavor of gothic spooky. I was excited to see a new version for television---especially with Ichabod being brought to the modern world without being “modern.”

Sleepy Hollow follows the story of Ichabod Crane and Abbie Mills, the two Witnesses, appointed to stop the coming of the Four Horsemen and the Apocalypse. It takes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and blends it with a twist on American Revolution history that is equally exciting, delightful, and intriguing. Figures such as George Washington and Paul Revere are reinvented---and Free Mason lore is heavily interpreted for the show's mythology. I went in for the premise, I stayed for the characters. Ichabod and Abbie are a powerful duo.

Another treat is Orlando Jones, who plays The Captain. He has embraced the Sleepy Hollow fandom on Twitter---and the Supernatural Family right along with it. He is engaging and witty. You can follow his twitter account at @TheOrlandoJones

Many Supernatural fans have latched onto this show as well---they're similar in concept after all! Various crossover ideas abound with each episode. If you're looking for a great fantasy show, Sleepy Hollow---or SuperSleepy as it's being called by the dual fandoms---might be for you.

Until next Friday!

It's Friday, so you know what that means!

Here is our second installment of FAE's Friday Faves.

Number One: Brian Buckley Band

The Brian Buckley Band was introduced to the Supernatural Family by Jared Padalecki himself. They've released some great albums such as Hysterical Blindness, Without Injuring Eternity, and For Her. Brian Buckley has a uniquely beautiful voice that soars over beautiful guitar. The band is an amalgamation of various genres from folk to rock to soul. All of the music is beautiful and full of emotional punch.

I was introduced to this wonderful band when I went to my first Supernatural convention in 2011. They were the concert for that Friday night, and I went in not knowing very much about them. By the end of the performance I was hooked.

Their music became great inspiration for me. I used it as my soundtrack while writing my novel. “I Am Human” is the song that I connected with the most.

If you want to know more about this wonderful band, check out their website.

Number Two: Osric Chau

Supernatural-BurCon-2013-Osric-Chau-interview_edited-2-600x400

Osric Chau was our beloved Kevin Tran on Supernatural. He's a talented actor with a bright future ahead of him. He's worked with the likes of David Carradine and had a role in the disaster film 2012. Chau's also done video game voicing. His next project, Killing Poe, is currently in post-production. He'll be playing the character Bud Polinski.

Since his stint on Supernatural, however, Chau has become more involved with the fandom. He has offered to work on a cosplay event at upcoming Supernatural Conventions that he's attending, selecting a fan that will also attend to help select his outfit. It'll be interesting to see what he does both professionally and on the convention circuit. Chau can be found on Twitter under the handle @OsricChau

Number Three: Nikita

This spy show signed off at the end of 2013. It's four seasons are full of action and suspense, but what really carried it was the relationships between Nikita and her various allies. It had a little bit of everything---humor, drama, tension, friendship, and yes, romance. With the secret government spying making the news these days, Nikita really hits home there, too. Maggie Q makes Nikita a kick ass woman that we all want to cheer for. If you haven't watched this brilliant show, find a way to watch it now in its entirety. It finishes with quite the bang.

Number Four: Super Wiki

300px-Supernatural_wiki_mast

Whenever I need to look up something for an article I'm writing about Supernatural, I always turn to the Supernatural Wiki for my information. They've massed so much of it throughout the show's history. They have everything from major character backgrounds---such as detailed biographies of Sam and Dean---to the littlest detail describing a weapon, minor character, or set design. If you want to know more about various crew members and their roles in making the show, Super Wiki has that covered, too. Super Wiki is a fanrun database and any fan in the Supernatural Family that is willing to help out can. It's one of the best fan resources around---and having it made by the fans for the fans makes it all the more special.

Number Five: Almost Human

This is a new show on FOX staring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy. It fits my TV bill for a buddy drama. Urban and Ealy have great chemistry as Kennex and Dorian. I admit it. I have a thing for buddy shows---especially those that have two characters that banter and bicker. The story centers on a future set in 2048 where all cops must be partnered with an android officer. Dorian is our android---but his model is distinctly more human than most. This is what gives Almost Human its undeniable charm. For a futuristic series, it also hits close to home both in emotions and questions about the advancement of technologies. If you haven't watched this series yet, give it a try.

Until next week!

It's Friday. To celebrate, I thought I'd start something new that I'd like to do each Friday.

I'll admit, I stole this from Felicia Day and her video log, The Flog, but I'd like to make 2014 all about expanding my horizons. On her show, she picks 5 things each week that she'd like to promote or share. I figure if I don't do something like post about it, I'll never get around to doing it. So here goes.

This week's FAE's Friday Faves:

gslogo

Number One: Geek and Sundry.

It only seems fair that I give a shout out to the channel that gave me the idea for this post. If you're into anything geeky---be it games, comics, fantasy writing, or anything else geek-centric---then this is the place for you. It has hilarious videos about playing video games, deep discussions on writing, and all around exploration of everything geek. I highly recommend that you surf around the site and pick what you like. You never know, you might find something new that you like, too!

My favorites so far: Co-optitude and The Flog. Oh, and The Guild.

Why do I love these three? The first one has hilarity with Felicia and her older brother Ryon playing retro video games. It's a great way to get some giggles going. The Flog, which inspired this little endeavor, always has something neat I wouldn't have known otherwise. And The Guild is just awesome, even if it's now finished.

As I explore more of Geek&Sundry, I'm looking forward to seeing and learning more.

Untitled

Number Two: Platinum Rose's Garden.

This weekly Supernatural podcast has become one of my favorites. I'll admit it, I only found out about it because I wrote this open letter. The showrunner of this podcast contacted me about my letter and read it on her show, but ever since I look forward to listening to her show every Saturday. Platinum Rose is funny and does some wicked recaps. She also promotes some neat things she finds in fandom on the show. If you really like Supernatural and want to listen to a fun podcast about it, then head over to Platinum Rose's Garden.

WFBHeaderBlack

Number Three: The Winchester Family Business.

You've probably already noticed this website pop up on this blog a few times now. It's the Supernatural website I write reviews and articles for. Alice Jester runs the site, and if you're looking for a good, intelligent discussion on the show, this is the site to visit. It ranges from deep analysis to wacky comedy pieces to an occasional piece of fanfiction. I've been honored to write for the website since 2011, and I look forward to writing for it as long as Alice will let me.

Number Four: Psych.

Psych came back this week after a long absence on my TV. This is my second all time favorite show, and I am more than overjoyed to have the crazy antics of Shawn Spencer and Burton “Gus” Guster back in my life. The show is hilarious and has one of the best duo stars around in James Roday and Dule Hill. If you love obscure 1980s references, fake psychic detectives, and bizarre crimes, this is the show for you. This is its 8th season.

Number Five: Opinicus Soaps.

I've included this mostly because I have to order another jar of their wonderful “Anti-Crack” cream. I have a hand that I refer to as the “Hand that Never Heals.” My right palm, right under my pinky finger, is one big rough patch that continually starts to crack and bleed. I work with cardboard, so it's aggravated endlessly, too.

When I went to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival this past summer, I found a new store called Opinicus Soaps. I'm already loyal to another soap shop (another fave for another time), but decided to see what this store had, considering it had more than just soap. They let me test a bit of this cream on my poor abused palm, and lo and behold, I felt it instantly penetrate the obnoxious patch.

The best part is that it has no greasy after effects, it's made by hand, and it has all natural ingredients. Oh, and it WORKS. But only if I can use it every night, which is why the “Hand that Never Heals” is back.

They also have lip balms, roll on perfumes, and of course soaps. Check them out here.

This concludes the first of FAE's Friday Faves.
